How to repair loose shingles
Central Florida gets its share of storms and high wind, and that takes a toll. After weather like that, most people look down at the branches across the lawn. Look up instead — wind can lift shingles loose or take them off entirely, and left alone that becomes a leak.
Step one: assess the damage
From the ground where possible, look for shingles that are lifted, curled, cracked or missing outright. Check the ground and gutters for granules and shingle fragments, which indicate wear even where the roof looks intact from below. Note anything near penetrations, valleys and edges — those are where damage matters most.
Step two: gather materials
Replacement shingles that match the existing roof, roofing nails, roofing cement, a flat pry bar and a utility knife. Matching matters more than people expect — shingle colour shifts with age, and a new bundle rarely matches a ten-year-old roof exactly.
Step three: remove and replace
Work carefully in mild weather on a dry roof. Loosen the damaged shingle and the sealant strip, remove the nails holding it and the course above, slide the replacement in, nail it in the correct position and seal it. Work when the roof is cool — shingles are easily damaged underfoot in Florida heat.
When to call a professional instead
Steep pitch, height, damage spread across multiple areas, anything near flashing or a valley, or any sign that water has already entered. Roof work is genuinely dangerous and a repair that does not seal properly leaves you worse off than before.
